"Clean Beauty is defined by products that are mindfully created and produced without any proven or suspected toxic ingredients. Clean Beauty products include ingredients ethically sourced and are made with the health of our bodies and the environment in mind." -- Art Of Organics

When I was in cosmetology school, we're taught that drugstore products are bad for your hair because of the harsh chemicals that strip your color and dry out your hair. Of course I knew that was true but I didn't know much else. Then I read that beauty products in the U.S. aren't regulated so anyone can put any ingredients in your products that are extremely harmful to you and your body and aren't benefiting you at all.
I started to teach myself more and thought that if I bought a product from Whole Foods or it said organic it made it "natural." That's not the case either. Just because a product says "all natural" doesn't necessarily mean it is. You should always look at the ingredients and if you don't know what it is, look it up. I use this site http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/. You can put it any product you're curious about and it'll tell you the hazard level of the product. They don't have everything but they have a lot.
When it was put in perspective for me that our skin is our largest organ and whatever you put on your skin, eyes, lips, you automatically absorb. That really opened my eyes and it was something I never thought about. I just thought that if you put things on your skin, it was topical and it couldn't do any harm to you. Not true at all.
Since then, I've been trying to be extremely conscious with not only my beauty products but the products I bring into my home and put into my body. People often think that buying organic and clean, non-toxic products is super expensive. What I have found is that it's sometimes cheaper or you can make some of the things yourself.
I wanted to share with you some of my favorite clean products and the importance of making the switch. This is all research I've done and things that I found work for ME. I'm no expert and I'm always learning so if you have any product recommendations. Send 'em my way! :)

Deodorant is the first thing that I switched when I started learning about clean beauty. Most conventional deodorants have aluminum which essentially plugs your sweat glands temporarily in order to make you sweat less. You're directly putting your deodorant on your armpit that rubs up on your breast which studies have shown can lead to possible breast cancer. Your skin there is very thin and absorbs things more easily.
Made in Portland. This product was recommended to me by one of my clients who swore by this deodorant. It comes in a tiny jar that seriously lasts FOREVER! It has plant-based powders that help absorb wetness without the use of aluminum. It doesn't feel sticky at all which was a plus to me, Certified vegan, cruelty-free and gluten-free. No aluminum, propylene glycol, parabens or phthalates.

The moment you put mascara on, it automatically goes in your eyes so this was extremely important to me because I have glaucoma and had cataracts up until last year for my entire life. I use mascara daily and I want to make sure that what I use is good for me and my eyes. It's also proven that eyesight gets worse as you age so why not make sure the products you use are not doing anymore harm to them?
I've been testing out a few different mascaras but found this one on sale at Whole Foods so I decided to give it a try. It performs AMAZING, lasts long and has very minimum ingredients.
**top scoring product on S.D.**

I just started using this recently and i'm seriously obsessed. It's so gentle and removes all dirt, impurities and makeup. It's full of antioxidants and helps maintain healthy moisture levels. Made with Coconut, Avocado, Tea Tree and Lavender Oil. Use daily.

I have extremely dry skin and I completely switched face "washes" two years ago when I found Scratch Goods. I used to use that apricot scrub (of course) and whatever else I used to buy at target that wasn't benefiting my skin AT ALL. It never felt soft or moisturized until I started using this sugar scrub. It makes a huge impact and I notice the difference when I don't use it.
Made in Chicago. Started by two ladies in their kitchen making soaps and now are about to open their SECOND location after only 2 years of having their first brick + mortar. All made with food-grade ingredients. The Lemon Charcoal scrub targets blackheads, removes impurities, gently exfoliates and fights bacteria. I use it every few days to gently exfoliate and remove dead skin. I also use the Dark Matter Coffee Scrub on my body (especially butt) to reduce appearance of cellulite and dark spots.

This one was really hard for me because I LOVE Bond No. 9 perfume (like $250 a bottle) which I still use on special occasions but I started getting really sensitive to smells. Everything began to smell fake to me.
I was working one day and this lady came in and smelled SO GOOD! I asked her what perfume she was wearing and she told me that it was AN OIL from Whole Foods and it was so cheap. I couldn't believe it! A clean, all natural oil that you can smell from feet away AND it's super affordable. I now use this everyday instead of my other perfume and get tons of compliments.
Nemat Amber Oil - $15.99
Made in India. Amber oil has a ton of benefits including: brain boosting, stress relief, libido, circulation, inflammation, heart health, immunity and calming.

Toothpaste is something else that you put in your MOUTH daily and probably swallow some of it so it should be non-toxic as well. There's also warning signs on the back of conventional toothpastes box that says "keep out of reach of children under 5. If you accidentally swallow, contact poison control." UMMMM, WHAT?!? I don't think a product you put in your mouth everyday, should contain poisonous ingredients. There are also articles that say fluoride is used as rat poison. Even if this isn't 100% true, I'd rather be safe than sorry.
Harry's Toothpaste - $6
Made in Washington. I've been on the search for a toothpaste that is natural, non-toxic that still leaves me with that clean, fresh breath feeling. I found this toothpaste at Merz Apothecary as it was recommended by a staff member. The first time I used it, it had a powerful taste but lemme tell you, it left my mouth feeling cleaner than EVER!
Made with only bentonite clay, calcium carbonate, colloidal silver water, sea salt, ionic minerals, mustard seed, essential oils of spearmint, eucalyptus, clove, wintergreen and oregano. No bullshit like fluoride, carrageenan or glycerin.

Cocokind Organic Chia Facial Oil - $15.49
Two years ago, I switched completely to oils instead of lotions and it made such a difference in my skin. Moisturizers are usually water based which means that they have to have some sort of preservative (paraben) and synthetic fragrance in them which isn't good for your skin. Oils usually have extremely minimal ingredients that are packed with minerals, vitamins and antioxidants.
I bought this facial oil in San Francisco and really love the way it makes my skin feel. I automatically feel hydrated and it absorbs extremely fast. This oil is packed with Omega's that give your skin the fatty acids, antioxidants and phytonutrients it deserves. This also has chamomile flowers that are calming to this skin.

I've been using this product for almost two years now and I absolutely love it. For it being kinda pricey, a little goes a long way. It's pretty sheer so if you need more coverage this may not be for you. It has an SPF of 30 so you don't have to worry about putting on any additional sunscreen. This is another thing I use almost daily which is why it was important for me to make the switch.
M U L T I F U N C T I O N A L
Made in the Philippines . I use this for almost anything. Dry lips, cuticles, cuts, hands and... TMI, nipples. It soothes, softens and heals your skin. It's pretty much magic in a jar.
Made in San Francisco - Ok, these products are AMAZING. I use them all for different things and they have super minimal, REAL ingredients for an extremely low cost.
MYMATCHA - I use this on my lips, as an under eye brightener or just apply it all over my face. Pretty much for anything and everything. It keeps your face moisturized ALL day and protects skin from free radical damage.
MACABEET - I use this as a natural lip tint or as a blush. Gives you a nice healthy glow and promotes healthier, firmer skin.
TURMERIC - This spot treatment is incredible. I apply it on any blemishes or pimples. I personally leave it on overnight and clean it off with a damp pad in the morning and it works wonders. It reduces inflammation and brightens skin.

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a great weekend! I just want to share with you how my new beauty regimen from Scratch Goods changed my skin completely. I met with the owners, Elizabeth + Maureen for my upcoming startup called Statera Trading Co. and they were some of the sweetest ladies I've ever met. The day we met with them was the first day they were opening the doors of their first shop in Roscoe Village. It has two chairs for treatments, a cute, well designed Take Home area and a treatment bar. It's small, cozy and the perfect start up size. Downstairs in the basement is where they make their products in-house. They are a full line of affordable (most expensive thing is $28) food-grade products with NO preservatives. I automatically wanted to take home the whole store as soon as they shared their story and mission, and I got to try some of the products.
They find locally sourced ingredients including Baker Miller oats and grains, Dark Matter Coffee, Bike-a-bee Honey and they even grow their own Lavender, Chamomile, Mint and more in a local garden they started in Avondale. Another plus, with every purchase helps provide hand washing education and materials for Sharing Hope preschool in Mozambique, Africa.
I scheduled a reservation to experience their Signature Treatment, and it was amazing! They start you off with a consultation asking you some basic, then a little more in-depth questions about your skin and lifestyle. Then they walk you up to their bar that has everything set up in a really unique, labratoriesque way. They have you pick out your mask, liquid and booster while educating you on what each one does.
I've always had pretty good skin with some dryness and minor acne on my forehead and breakouts here and there. I was using Lush products but didn't feel like they worked that well. I just liked the thought that they were natural but when come to find out, only a few of their products are actually natural, organic and cruelty-free. Since using Scratch Goods, I have very little or if any acne on my forehead and have not had a breakout in the past 6 weeks (knock on wood.)
My Scratch Goods wardrobe is constantly building and I now own about 10 of their products and none of them have disappointed me.
Here are some of my faves:
